7 Tips for Stunning Wedding Photos (From the Pros Who Take Them)

· 7 min read

Your wedding photos are the one thing from your day that stays with you forever. The flowers fade, the cake gets eaten, the dress goes into a box, but the photographs remain. They’re what you show your children. They’re what sits on your mantelpiece. They’re how you’ll remember not just what the day looked like, but how it felt.

Getting great wedding photos isn’t just about hiring a talented photographer (though that matters enormously). It’s also about how well you prepare, how intentionally you plan, and how present you allow yourself to be on the day. Here are seven tips to help you get the most out of your wedding photo shoot.

1. Choose Your Photographer for Their Story-Telling Style, Not Just Their Aesthetic

Before you look at editing styles, lighting preferences, or colour grading, look at how a photographer tells a story. Scroll through a full wedding gallery, not just the highlight reel on their homepage, and ask yourself: does this feel like a day that unfolded naturally, or a series of beautiful but disconnected moments?

The best wedding photographers are documentary storytellers as much as they are technical artists. They capture the quiet moments between the set pieces, your dad’s face when he sees you, your partner trying not to cry at the altar, your grandmother laughing at the speeches. Those are the images you’ll return to most.

Once you find a photographer whose storytelling moves you, then look at aesthetics. Not the other way around.

2. Invest in a Pre-Wedding Shoot

A pre-wedding shoot, sometimes called an engagement shoot, is one of the most valuable things you can do before your wedding day, and it’s consistently underestimated by couples who skip it.

Here’s why it matters: the camera is an intimate thing. Being photographed well requires a degree of comfort and trust with the person behind the lens, and that comfort doesn’t come instantly. Most people feel stiff, self-conscious, and unsure of what to do with their hands the first time they’re photographed. A pre-wedding shoot burns through all of that before the stakes are high.

By the time your wedding day arrives, you know how your photographer works, they know how you move, and you’re not wasting the most precious hours of your day getting comfortable with a stranger.

A pre-wedding shoot also gives you a chance to see how you look together in photographs, the angles, the light, the expressions, so you can give your photographer better feedback and arrive on the day knowing what works.

3. Build a Realistic Shot List, Then Let Go of It

A shot list is a useful tool. An obsessive shot list is a recipe for a stressful day.

The couples who get the most beautiful photographs are the ones who are actually present, laughing, talking, being with each other and their guests, not the ones who are mentally ticking off poses between each camera click. Your photographer’s job is to capture your day. Give them the framework, then trust them to do it.

What belongs on a shot list: The must-have group combinations (immediate family, bridal party, specific guests), any cultural or religious moments that need to be documented, and any detail shots you particularly care about (the rings, the flowers, something personal).

What doesn’t need to be on a shot list: Every pose you’ve seen on Pinterest. Your photographer has shot hundreds of weddings. They know the shots.

Share the list with your photographer at your pre-wedding meeting, not on the morning, so they can flag anything logistically tricky in advance.

4. Plan Your Couple Portraits Around the Light

The couple portrait session is the one part of the day that’s most directly in your control, and the light you shoot in makes an enormous difference to the result.

The golden hour, roughly the hour before sunset, produces the warmest, most flattering, most atmospheric light of the entire day. If your timeline allows for it, positioning your couple portraits around golden hour gives your photographer the best possible conditions to work with.

Talk to your photographer at the planning stage about where the light falls at your venue and at what time. A photographer who has shot at your venue before will know exactly where to take you and when. If they haven’t, visit together.

If golden hour doesn’t work for your timeline, don’t panic, open shade (away from direct harsh sunlight) is a close second, and a skilled photographer will always find good light. Just don’t commit to outdoor portraits in direct midday sun if you can help it.

5. Give Your Photographer the Context They Need

Your photographer is going to be with you for most of your wedding day. The more they understand about what the day means to you, the better they’ll be at anticipating the moments that matter.

Before the wedding, share the things that are specific to you: the relationship you have with your dad that makes that first look moment everything, the grandmother who has been waiting thirty years to see you married, the best man whose speech is going to be emotional, the personalised details on the cake that took weeks to organise. These are the moments your photographer needs to be looking for, and they can only look for them if they know they exist.

A good pre-wedding conversation with your photographer is as important as any technical preparation.

6. Think About What You’re Wearing, In Detail

What you wear affects how you photograph, in ways that go beyond colour and silhouette.

Fabric: Flowing, movement-friendly fabrics photograph beautifully outdoors. Heavy, stiff fabrics can look flat. Ask your photographer’s opinion on your dress at your pre-wedding shoot.

Colour: If you’re having outdoor portraits, think about how your outfit interacts with the environment. A white dress against a white wall disappears. Think about contrast and how the surroundings will frame you.

Details: The details you’ve spent hours choosing, embroidery, buttons, the edge of your veil, photograph best when your photographer knows to look for them. Point them out. Ask for specific detail shots.

Comfort: The most beautiful photographs come from people who are comfortable in what they’re wearing. If your shoes are destroying you by 3pm, the camera will know. Think about what you can change into for the portrait session.

7. Protect Time for Just the Two of You

Weddings are full. Full of people, full of moments, full of things happening simultaneously. Couples who don’t deliberately protect time alone together on their wedding day often arrive at the end of it realising they barely spoke to each other for six hours.

Your couple portrait session is not just a photography opportunity, it’s a genuine pause in the day. A moment to breathe, to be with each other, to actually land in the reality of what just happened. The photographs you get from a couple who are relaxed, connected, and genuinely present with each other are incomparably better than the ones from a couple who are rushing through it.

Tell your coordinator or bridal party that this time is protected. No interruptions. No logistics. Just you two and your photographer.
